How much would a consultant cost you for a day? How much for a week?
It varies a lot depending on who you hire but the current basic daily rate for a business consultant according to itjobswatch (May 2009) is £401 (around 600 Dollars).That comes to £2005 or around 3000 Dollars a week. Get someone with a fancy name and it will cost you many times more.
If you want to keep the consultant available all the time that runs to £100,000 or 150,000 Dollars a year. If you need extra skills in your business that you don’t yet have or if you need extra resources then 150,000 Dollars may be a great investment if you have the money.
Many small business just need some ideas for how to run their business better, get more sales, decide what new market to develop. If that is what you need then remember the old saying.
A consultant is someone you pay a lot of money to tell you things that you already know
Sounds like a joke? Perhaps, but if it is your money then it really isn’t funny. The consultant will be the one laughing all the way to the bank whilst you are the one 150,000 Dollars poorer.
Nobody knows your business better than you do
You work in it every day, you know all the great stuff about your products, you know the things that need improving. You talk to your customers, they tell you what they love, what they want. You know stuff about your business that you would be embarrassed to tell your best friend, so you are not going to tell a consultant all that you know about the money you wasted on bad ideas.
There are lots of reasons why you don’t use all the stuff that you already know but your Inner Consultant can help with a lot of them.

That is up to you. You can pay as 100 Dollars, as little as a Dollar or nothing at all. You decide after you have listened. I believe that most people are honest and will pay what it is worth to them.
